Nothing like inviting the internet to come and beat on you in a "legal" faction". However if they planned it all right it would have been a great time to stress test some of their infrastructure (what is actually theirs and not just mirror pointing). Yes it was a big PR stunt but isn't the entire book of Guinness WW's? I even read a post from someone saying "Wow what a achievement to go against yourself for a record". As far as I know there has been no official deceleration from anyone for such a record and they all have to start some where.
